From the first LNG carrier out of Western Australia in 1989, almost 25 years ago, Western Australian LNG has grown to the point where there are now two LNG projects in operation, encompassing six trains and 21.4 million tonnes per annum of production capacity.

Western Australia has 25 per cent of new LNG development globally, with five major LNG projects under construction in the State, valued at $107.8 billion.

Annual LNG production capacity in Western Australia is expected to grow sharply from 21.4Mt to 50Mt by 2017 as new projects come on stream. Western Australia’s LNG production capacity will expand beyond 70Mt if the pipeline of projects awaiting FID are realised.

By the end of the decade Australia is expected to produce 87 Mt of LNG which is likely to make Australia the world’s largest LNG producer.
