WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S TIES WITH AFRICA

Industry Profile

The African continent presents a diverse economic and commercial potential. The Western Australian Government has shared a strong and vibrant partnerships with the countries of Africa and is committed to long-term ties of friendship and cooperation.

More than 70 per cent of Australia’s investments into Africa comes from the State of Western Australia, mainly from its thriving mining sector. The scale of Australia’s mining presence in Africa is significant, with projects accounting for 40 per cent of Australia’s overseas ventures in gold, uranium, copper, coal, platinum, diamonds and iron ore.

Current figures show that 168 Western Australian mining companies are operating 807 projects in Africa, in 33 of the 54 African countries.

Exemplifying Australia’s engagement and Western Australia's commitment to the continent, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed between Western Australia and COMESA in January 2014.

The MoU aims to provide economic opportunities for both Western Australia and the COMESA nations through the sharing of knowledge and technology in the resources and agriculture fields.

A Joint Working Group set up under the MoU will be tasked with tapping into Western Australia’s expertise to help African nations to further develop their mining laws, tenement systems, and environmental and safety standards.

This is Western Australia’s new global footprint.
